How do you spell Mazda? If you said “S-A-F-E” you are correct! Mazda’s are head-turning, fine-tuned, meticulously crafted vehicles that are also incredibly safe to drive. In fact, Mazda recently earned more safety awards than any other automaker and just last month six Mazda models drove home with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Ratings. So, today, let’s take a moment to shine a spotlight on the six Mazda models that earned the IIHS awards and what this award means.
Which Mazdas earned the Top Safety Pick+ Award?
The IIHS recently awarded the following Mazdas top honors:
And, not to be overlooked, the MAZDA CX-9 Crossover earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK for 2020 when equipped with specific headlights.
What does it take to earn a Top Safety Pick Award?
To qualify for the IIHSA’s top two award — the Top Safety Pick and the Top Safety Pick+ — a vehicle must earn good ratings in each of the Institute’s six crashworthiness tests, which include:
- moderate overlap front
- driver-side small overlap front
- passenger-side small overlap front
- side, roof strength and head restraints & seats
Not only did Mazda’s award winners earn these top marks, they also earned advanced or superior ratings in two front crash prevention tests: vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian.
What makes Mazda’s so safe?
Every inch of a Mazda is designed with the driver and passenger in mind. This obsession with detail and meticulous fine tuning is what sets Mazda apart in terms of drive quality and comfort, but it is also the exact attitude that’s led to the creation of some seriously safe vehicles.
New Mazda models boast top marks for safety due in large part to Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE®, which is an umbrella term that covers a series of advanced driver-assistive safety technologies. i-ACTIVESENSE® uses milliwave radars and cameras to actively prevent accidents from occurring and mitigating their impact if one does occur.
i-ACTIVESENSE® technologies include:
- Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection
- Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning
- Smart Brake Support
- Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function
- Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
- Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-Keep Assist
- Driver Attention Alert
- High Beam Control
- Adaptive Front-Lighting System
- Traffic Sign Recognition
