How Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G Engine Technology Works

Mazda is committed to improving the driving experience so their drivers get the most out of each and every drive. By continuously re-examining and refining, Mazda consistently develops new performance technologies. SKYACTIV-G is just the latest product to come out of Mazda’s obsession with details.

With SKYACTIV-G, Mazda drivers enjoy significantly improved engine efficiency, which improves everyday driving thanks to increased torque at low to mid engine speeds. SKYACTIV-G is the world’s first gasoline engine designed for mass production vehicles to achieve a high compression ratio of 13.0:1. What this means for the everyday Mazda driver is improved fuel efficiency, and that always translates to less time and money spent at the pump and more time for driving fun!

SKYACTIV-G works by increasing the compression ratio without a result in knocking—an abnormal combustion in which the air-fuel mixture ignites prematurely due to exposure to high temperature and pressure, thus creating an unwanted high-frequency noise. To increase the compression ratio and reduce the risk of knocking, residual gas is reduced using 4-2-1 engine exhaust systems, implementing a piston cavity, and optimizing fuel injection. Additionally, the combustion duration is shortened by intensifying air flow, increasing injection pressure, and using multi-hole injectors, all of which work together to decrease the risk of knocking.
