With SKYACTIV-G, Mazda drivers enjoy significantly improved engine efficiency, which improves everyday driving thanks to increased torque at low to mid engine speeds. SKYACTIV-G is the world’s first gasoline engine designed for mass production vehicles to achieve a high compression ratio of 13.0:1. SKYACTIV-G works by increasing the compression ratio without a result in knocking—an abnormal combustion in which the air-fuel mixture ignites prematurely due to exposure to high temperature and pressure, thus creating an unwanted high-frequency noise. To increase the compression ratio and reduce the risk of knocking, residual gas is reduced using 4-2-1 engine exhaust systems, implementing a piston cavity, and optimizing fuel injection. Additionally, the combustion duration is shortened by intensifying air flow, increasing injection pressure, and using multi-hole injectors, all of which work together to decrease the risk of knocking.
