The legendary sports car returns for 2019 with new features and updates to welcome a new wave of drivers straight to driving bliss. The lightweight, two-seater roadster has always been a dream to drive; however, Mazda has found several ways to enrich and refine the beloved MX-5 to further enhance its innate dreaminess. Here’s what’s new.
- Engine Improvements. Mazda’s revolutionary SKYACTIV-G 2.0 received a power increase of 26 horsepower and 3 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a boost of 17 percent more power, greater fuel efficiency than last year’s model, and a quicker more responsive ride. All 2019 MX-5s come standard in the U.S. with a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine, capable of producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The new engine comes paired to either a standard SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission or an available 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Sport mode.
- Customization. In addition to new package options available at each trim level including — i-ACTIVSENSE Sport Package, Brembo/BBS Package and Brembo/BBS/Recaro Package, GT-S Package, i-ACTIVSENSE Club Package — the new 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata now offers an available brown soft top for its MX-5 Grand Touring models.
- Comfort. All trim levels include a new standard tilt/telescoping steering column with 30mm of telescoping and 42mm of tilt range. This new feature allows each driver to find their ideal driving position. Side note: The new steering column is made of aluminum instead of steel used in earlier models, a switch that makes this lightweight roadster even lighter.
- Safety Features. All trim levels include a new standard rearview camera to assist drivers when backing up and parking. Additionally, the new Mazda MX-5 includes available traffic sign recognition and smart city brake support with low speed automatic emergency braking.
